Employment Figures

Speaking recently from the Constituency, Fiona said “There is always more to do but these figures are encouraging”:

·        On 11 September 2013, the ONS published labour market statistics for the three months to July 2013 and the Claimant Count (Jobseeker’s Allowance) figures for August 2013 (ONS, Labour Market Statistics, 11 September 2013, link).

o   Employment level: 29.84 million (up 80,000 on the previous quarter, up 275,000 from a year earlier and up 994,000 since the election).

o   Employment rate: 71.6 per cent (up 0.2 points on the previous quarter and up 0.4 points from a year earlier).

o   Unemployment level: 2.49 million (down 24,000 on the previous quarter, down 105,000 from a year earlier and down 7,000 since the election).

o   Unemployment rate: 7.7 per cent (down 0.1 points on the previous quarter and down 0.4 points from a year earlier).

o   Claimant count: 1.40 million in August 2013 (down 32,600 from July 2013, down 168,100 from a year earlier and down 93,000 since the election).

·        The private sector has created more than 1.4 million jobs in the past three years. Excluding the reclassification of education sector jobs, the private sector has created more than 1.4 million new jobs over the past three years (ONS, Public Sector Employment, Table 5A and 7A, 11 September 2013, link).

Over the past three years for every one job lost in the public sector, the private sector has created three new jobs
